I’ve mentioned several times that I’ve been working on a TOP SECRET project at the Oatley Academy, and I can finally talk about it!
Chris and I are launching the most audacious course at the Academy yet: Oately Academy Live!
OA Live is a lot more than a class—it’s a community and an interactive experience. If you have any desire to make your own project (like a short film, storybook, or comic series), this is for you.
OA Live is a positive, passionate community of visual storytellers with classes taught by some of the entertainment industry’s best teachers.
If you want the full details, listen to the introduction segment of Paper Wings Episode #33, and listen to me, Chris and our co-host Justin Copeland give you the full rundown! (That episode is doubly amazing because we interviewed Tangled and Frozen’s Claire Keane!)
I just used so many exclamation points… I can’t help it!
Chris and I have been working on OA Live for over a year, and working on it intensely for the last six months. Being able to talk about it publicly and watch it actually take shape is so fulfilling.
For years, Chris has been asking me to teach a course at the Oatley Academy, but he never pitched one that got me as excited as making The Dreamer does. And I didn’t want to be a half-hearted teacher. I was either all-in, or I was going to pass.
When he pitched me OA Live as “The Paper Wings Show on steroids” and told me it would be about personal projects and storytelling, I said yes without even thinking about.
My gut was right.
This is the most fun I’ve had in years—those of you who have already enrolled can attest to that!

While I was packing up my office last night, I came across a box of early Dreamer writings and drawings.
I found my original pitch letter that I sent to IDW (it’s adorable), sketches for scenes drawn years before they appeared in the comic (Alan in the bathtub?), binders full of reference, costume designs, (really awful) first-drafts of scripts and a lot more.
I’ll be sharing it on Patreon for the Behind-The-Scenes supporters over the next month, so I hope you enjoy it!
