The American troops surrendered at Fort Washington were taken prisoner–most for the duration of the war. Some officers were released in prisoner exchanges but the rank and file didn’t stand much chance. In New York City, ships were converted into floating prisons, and disease ran rampant. Prison ships were more more deadly than the battlefield.
